Why carbon electrodes are used in the process of electrolysis?

Open in App
Solution

Dear student!

Electrode are used to conduct electricity in the solution and Carbon is used in the form of graphite which is exceptionally a non metal which conducts electricity. Actually, the structure of graphite as a giant covalent structure which causes the electrons to flow through it. Basically, anything where the electrons can flow through the structure, that structure can conduct electricity and so used as electrode. Also, carbon is a cheaper and its graphite form is chemically inert in nature so do not cause any change in the reaction made.
