Question

why did the british want the tribal people to settle down as peasant cultivators?

Open in App
Solution

The British wanted the tribal communities to settle down because:

1. the British were not comfortable with semi-nomadic people and those who did not have a permanent home.

2. the British were of the opinion that it is easier to monitor, administer and control people who were settled.

3. they also wanted a fixed income and settling the tribal communities would ensure a fixed agricultural produce and thus a fixed revenue.
