Ans The causes for the failure of the first war of Independence are given as follows:
1. The mutineers and the princes had no unified plan or vision for the future of the country, they fought the British only to regain their lost possessions. Hence they failed to garner enough support among the people. In fact the educated and the business classes were opposed to them. Many Indian kings and princes supported the British to suppress the rebellion.
2. The major provinces like Bengal, Punjab and the Southern provinces remained peaceful and witnessed no significant rebellion against British rule.
3.The mutineers had meagre resources to carry on a long term war against the British. On the other hand the British could always rely on reinforcements from Britain.
4. The British commanded a better equipped army and ammunitions as compared to the mutineers.
5. The British had a superior administrative and military structure which was able to tackle the rebellious princes and soldiers who had no combined strategy. They had little in common except their hatred against the British.
