Why do humans reach sexual maturity during adolescence and not right from the birth of an individual?

To reach sexual maturity one need to grow up both mentally and physically, such as growth of secondary sexual character, growth of gonads, synthesis of various hormones must take place, which is not possible right from the birth of an individual. So an individual attains sexual maturity during adolescence.
