The sky appears blue due to the Rayleigh scattering or we can say the sky is blue due to the scattering of sunlight by gas molecules in the atmosphere. As sunlight passes through the atmosphere the tiny particles of atmosphere scatters the sunlight. The shortest wavelengths violet and blue are scattered more shortly than the others . Although violet light has shorter wavelength than blue and is scattered more than blue but our eyes are not as sensitive to the violet range of light, so that is why we see mainly blue.
