why does carbon bond only with monovalent elements ?

Dear student,
Carbon can form bonds with monovalent, divalent and can also with trivalent elements. As it has tendency to form p$\pi$-p$\pi$ multiple bonds due to its small size.
e.g CO₂,-CN etc
