Question

WHY DOES WATER SOMETIMES SMELL LIKE ROTTEN EGGS?

Open in App
Solution

When water contains many nutrients, eventually anaerobic bacteria, which do not need oxygen will become highly active. These bacteria produce some gases during their activities. One of these gases is hydrogen sulfide. This compounds smells like rotten eggs. When water smells like rotten eggs we can say that there is hydrogen sulfide present, due to a shortage of oxygen in the water.
