Question

why is sodium bisulphate used for the purification of aldehyde and ketones?

Open in App
Solution

Hi,

When saturated solution of sodium hydrogensulphite also called sodium bisulphite is mixed with an impure aldehyde/ ketone, it produces an addition compound with white crystals. These crystals can easily be filtered and washed to remove any other impurities. Then, addition of dilute acid or alkali would regenerate the pure aldehyde/ ketone. That is why sodium bisulphite is used for purification of aldehyde and ketones.
