Why is mercury, and not any other substance, used in clinical and lab thermometers?

Hi Arka,
Mercury is the only metal which is liquid at room temperature and has high coefficient of expansion i.e. it expands with the slightest change in temperature. Hence, even the slight change in temperature is easily notable when it is used in a thermometer. Also, mercury has a shiny appearance and doesn't stick to the glass surface.
