Question

WHY Ph of acide depends upon hydrogen ions why not other ions

Open in App
Solution

All the acid furnish H+ ion in solution. So, H+ ion is common to all the acids. More over reactivity of an acid is reactivity of H+ ions only. Like in neutralizations of acid and base , there is reaction between H+ ion and OH- ions. Therefore pH of acid is explained in term of H+ concentration as follows:
pH = - log[H+]
