Question

why sulphur is used in car tyres and why chlorine is used for bleaching

Open in App
Solution

i) Car tyres are made up of rubber. Natural rubber is very soft thus it cannot be used as such for making tyres since tyres have to overcome the force of friction on roads .Sulphur is added to rubber to make it hard by the process called vulcanisation of rubber. So that now hard rubber can be used for the purpose of tyre making .

ii) Chlorine is used for bleaching because chlorine is a good oxidising agent. The stains are due to some coloured compounds .When chlorine reacts with water it produces atomic oxygen. This oxygen reacts with coloured substances and turn them colourless.
