Question

Why the heart is beating whenit is taken out of the body?

Open in App
Solution

Heart has its own impulse generating tissue called Sinoatrial node (SAN). It is present at the upper right corner of the right atrium. It is also known as the pacemaker of the heart. The action potential generated in the SAN is conducted towards the ventricles and cause the heart beat.

This node can stimulate the heart beat on its own for some time if entire heart is isolated. That is why, the heat beats even after taking out of the body as long as it continues to receive oxygen for ATP generation.
