The correct option is C HIV positive individuals are usually shunned from the society
HIV (human immunodeficiency virus) is responsible for causing acquired immunodeficiency syndrome (AIDS) in humans. HIV weakens the human immune system and the person becomes vulnerable to opportunistic infections, the patient struggles to cope with them but eventually dies.
People often tend to hide the fact that they are HIV positive because there is a lot of social taboo and stigma associated with HIV and AIDS which mainly arises due to the lack of awareness.
Most people are under the impression that AIDS spreads through regular or sexual contact only and thus are in fear of being near a HIV positive person. This is one of the major reasons why HIV positive individuals are alienated and shunned by society for their condition.
Also the fact that HIV can be transmitted during sexual intercourse creates a lot of judgement against the lifestyle and life choices of a HIV positive individual. People fail to realise that HIV can be transmitted by the exchange of body fluids not only through a sexual act but also through routes such as -
transfusion of blood or blood products from an infected to a healthy person.
from an infected mother to her child during birth.
by use of unsterilised needles which have been used by a person infected with HIV.
There have been many illegal cases of HIV positive persons being terminated from work, HIV positive children being denied school admissions or being asked to leave the school on unfair grounds because of their condition.
Sadly, HIV infected persons are often abandoned by friends and family too. This is not only because they are afraid of contracting the disease but also because they too are afraid of being humiliated and judged by the society.
For the physical and mental well-being of the AIDS patients, it is absolutely necessary that they are not isolated or judged.
