Question

Perform an activity to obtain colored components or dye from a blue or black dye by the process of evaporation.

Solution

Defining evaporation

The process of obtaining a non-volatile soluble solid from its solution by allowing the liquid component to vaporize is called evaporation.

Activity

To obtain colored components or dye from a blue or black dye by the process of evaporation.

Procedure

  1. Take a beaker filled with water.
  2. Place a watch glass on the beaker's mouth.
  3. Fill the watch glass with a few droplets of ink.
  4. Heat the beaker containing water, and then turn off the heat when there is no liquid present in the watch glass.
  5. Keep close track of your observations.

Observation

On heating, the liquid in the watch glass evaporates. In a dry state, a residue will be left on the watch glass. Evaporation can be used to separate the volatile component (solvent) from its non-volatile solute. A dye is mixed with water to make ink.

Conclusion

We can deduce from this behavior that ink is a mixture of dye and water rather than a single material.
