Question

Perform an activity to obtain colored components or dye from black ink by the process of chromatography.

Solution

Chromatography - It is the technique for the separation of a mixture by passing it in the solution or suspension through a medium in which the components move at different rates. It is the method based on the difference in the rate of adsorption of various components of a mixture on a suitable adsorbent.

Activity:

  1. Take a thin strip of filter paper.
  2. Draw a line on the paper by using a pencil, approx 3cm above the lower edge.
  3. Put a small drop of ink (water-soluble, from a sketch pen or any fountain pen) at the centre of the line.
  4. Allow it to dry. Put the filter paper into a jar, glass, beaker or test tube containing water so that the drop of ink on the paper is just above the water level.
  5. Leave it undisturbed. Watch carefully, as the water rises up on the filter paper.
  6. What do you observe on the filter paper as the water rises on it?
  7. Did you find different colours on the filter paper strip?
  8. R

Observation:
1. Ink that we use has water as the solvent and the dye is soluble in it and so when the water rises on the filter paper it takes along with it the dye particles.
2. Yes, different coloured spots of dyes are obtained because a dye is a mixture of two or more colours.

Final Conclusion :
Since the ink is a mixture of two or more colours so the more soluble colour rises faster and gets separated.
