Photons of energy 5eV are incident on the cathode, as shown in the figure. Electrons reaching the anode have kinetic energy varying from 6eV to 8eV. Find the work function of metal in eV.

Solution
The electrons emitted from cathode get accelerated by 5V battery connected.
So, the kinetic energy of electrons reaching the anode will have two kinetic energies, one due to photoelectric effect and the other due to energy supplied by the battery.
∴KE=KEmax+eV=8[∵KE due to photoelectric effect is taken to be maximum]
