Solution

The correct option is A Black walnut tree and herbaceous plants
Commensalism is a type of interspecific interaction in which, out of the two interacting species, one is benefited and the other is neither benefited or harmed. The organism that gets benefitted is called commensal and the organism that does not derive any benefit nor gets harmed is called a host.

The clownfish live very near to the sea anemone as they get protection from the predators because of the stinging tentacles of the sea anemone. The clownfish is a commensal organism in this interaction as it is getting benefited.

The cattle egrets (birds) and the grazing cattle also exhibit commensalism. Egrets are birds that are usually found along with the grazing cattle. The cattle egret is commensal in this interaction as it is getting benefited. While grazing, the cattle stir up and flush out insects from the vegetation which the bird feeds on.

Certain barnacles are found attached to the back of the whales. The barnacles benefit from this interaction as they find a stable place to live, a free ride and access to plenty of food.

If out of the two interacting species, one gets inhibited or destroyed (harmed) and another one is unaffected (neither harmed nor benefitted), then such a type of interaction is called amensalism.

This type of interaction has been observed between black walnut trees and herbaceous plants. The black walnut tree secretes chemicals called juglones that inhibit the growth of the herbaceous plants like tomatoes and blueberries. The black walnut trees are unaffected by this interaction.

As options a, b and c are examples of commensalism, the odd one out will be option d as it is an example of amensalism.
