When a cell is placed in hypertonic solution then exosmosis occurs. Due to exosmosis the protoplasm shrinks and leaves the cell wall and thus cell becomes flaccid. The cell shrinks because the water flows from lower concentration of solute, that is from inside the cell to the higher concentration of solute, that is outside the cell, and the protoplasm shrinks towards a corner of the cell, called plasmolysis.
