An acid is a proton (H+) donor. A base is a proton (hydrogen ion) acceptor. Acids dissociate into H+ ions in water. The acid H2SO4 dissociates into H+ and SO24 will show the presence of H+ even after they dissolve in water. KOH gives OH ion.
