An ecological pyramid is a graphical representation designed to show the biomass or bio productivity at each trophic level in a given ecosystem. A pyramid of energy is a graphical representation of the amount of energy at each trophic level of a food chain. They are expressed in units of energy per area per time. Pyramids of energy will never appear inverted as some of the energy stored in one source is always lost upon transfer. Pyramid of energy is upright because when energy flows from a trophic level to next trophic level, some energy is always lost as heat at each step.
