Question

Q. An organic compound 'P' is an essential constituent of wine and beer . P is responsible for the intoxication caused by these drinks . Oxidation of P in the presence of acetobacter yields an organic compound 'Q' which is present in vinegar . P reacts with Q in the presence of concentrated sulphuric acid to from a sweet smelling substance 'R' which is used making artificial flavours and essence. Identify P, Q and R and also write their structural formula.

Solution

Dear student,

P is essential constituent of beer.
P = Ethanol C2H5OH
P on oxidation forms Q which is an important component in vinegar.
Q = Ethanoic acid CH3COOH
P reacts with Q in presence of concentrated sulphuric acid, forms R .
R = Ethyl ethanoate CH3COOC2H5
This is esterification reaction.
CH3COOH + C2H5OH CH3COOC2H5 + H2O
