Question

Q. Explain how deforestation can result in drought and floods?

Open in App
Solution

Deforestation leads to floods because:

1️⃣Trees prevent sediment runoff, because the roots of the trees absorb water from the soil.

2️⃣This makes the soil dry.

3️⃣The dry soil is able to store more rainwater.

4️⃣In absence of trees the soil is not able to hold large amount of water and the water runs off in the rivers.

5️⃣This causes the rivers fill more quickly they are much more prone to floods.

Deforestation leads to drought because:

1️⃣The trees helps in maintaining water cycle in nature.

2️⃣They absorbs water from the soil and distributes it in the atmosphere by the process of transpiration.

3️⃣The accumulation of these water vapours in the atmosphere is one of the reason of rainfall.

4️⃣Now in the absence of trees this process does not take place and leads to low rainfall.

5️⃣Thus, causes drought in that area.
