The Union Cabinet has approved the introduction of the Chit Funds (Amendment) Bill, 2019 in the Lok Sabha. The Bill makes amendments to the Chit Funds Act, 1982. In chit funds, the people agree to pay a certain amount from time to time into a fund. Periodically, one of the subscribers is chosen by drawing a chit to receive the prize amount from the fund. - The amendment will allow for the terms ‘fraternity fund’ and ‘rotating savings and credit institution’ to the list of terms that can be used to refer to chit funds.
- At present, the 1982 Act does not apply to chits smaller than ₹100. The Bill seeks to remove the limit of ₹100 and allows the State government to set the limit.
- This amendment applies to conventional chits in which there is a common pool and each member gets the pool based on auction or lottery etc. They are going to be called fraternity funds just to signal the difference to the Prized chits.
