During World War II (1939-45), Japanese in south-east Asia kept winning one victory after another against the British. As a result, a large number of Indian soldiers fell prisoners into their hands. Japan captured about 40,000 Indian soldiers as prisoners of war after the Fall of Singapore in February 1942. Japan handed them over to Captain Mohan Singh who had earlier surrendered to the Japanese Army. Britain's defeat aroused great hope among the Indian soldiers. They were ready to take action which led to the formation of the Indian independence league. The organizer of the league was Rash Behari Bose, an old revolutionary who had fled to Japan in 1915. The league aimed at mobilizing the members of the Indian community for the purpose of secure Indian independence.
