Panmunjom Declaration

  • North Korean leader Kim Jong-un and South Korean President Moon Jae-in signed the Panmunjom Declaration for Peace, Prosperity and Unification of the Korean Peninsula, on April 27.
  • They pledged to work for the ‘complete denuclearisation of the Korean Peninsula’. They also committed to pursue talks with the United States to declare an official end to the Korean War, which ravaged the countries from 1950 to 1953.
  • The meeting between Kim Jong-un and Moon Jae-in marked the third time that leaders of the two Koreas have met. It was also the first time that a North Korean leader entered the southern territory.
  • South Korean president Moon too briefly crossed into the northern side. At the summit, before the signing of the Panmunjom Declaration, Kim and Moon took part in a symbolic tree-planting ceremony in the Korean Demilitarised Zone. The tree was from 1953, the year the Korean War armistice was signed.
  • Apart from agreeing to realise a nuclear-free Korean peninsula and pursue talks to sign a peace treaty, the South and North Korea agreed to encourage more active cooperation, exchanges, visits and contacts at all levels.
  • They agreed to resolve the humanitarian issues that resulted from the division of the peninsula. The Koreas also agreed to proceed with reunion programmes for the separated families on the occasion of the National Liberation Day on August 15 this year.
