Let distance covered in the map be x

Here actual distance and distance covered in the map are in direct proportion.
$\therefore \frac{18}{1}=\frac{72}{x}\Rightarrow x\times 18=72\times 1\Rightarrow x=\frac{72\times 1}{18}$
Hence, the distance covered in the map is 4 cm.
