Question 2
(a) What are the uses of products obtained from the chloralkali process?
(b) What happens if we pass an electric current through a saturated solution of sodium chloride?
(a) The uses of the products obtained from the chloralkali process are:
● Hydrogen gas is used as fuel, preparation ammonia and hydrogenation of oils.
● Chlorine gas is used as a disinfectant and is used in the preparation of PVC and CFC.
● Sodium hydroxide is used to degrease metals, in the preparation of soaps, detergent and paper making.
(b) When an electric current is passed through a saturated solution of sodium chloride (brine), it is electrolysed and hydrogen gas is released at the cathode while chlorine gas is released at the anode. This method is used for the production of chlorine gas. In this method, an important basic compound NaOH is formed in the cell.
