Question 6
Depletion of ozone is mainly due to
(a) chlorofluorocarbon compounds
(b) carbon monoxide
(c) methane
(d) pesticides
Option (a) is correct.
Chlorofluorocarbons (CFCs) and other halogenated ozone depleting substances (ODS) are mainly responsible for man-made chemical ozone depletion. These are synthetic chemicals which are used as refrigerants and in fire extinguishers. Carbon monoxide leads to air pollution. It causes harm to humans by combining with haemoglobin and forms carboxyhemoglobin or carboxyhaemoglobin (symbol COHb or HbCO), thus affecting the oxygen-carrying capacity of blood. Methane is a greenhouse gas, released from power stations, chemical industries etc. Pesticides are not degradable and thus cause biological magnification.
