Question 73
Explain the process of nutrition in Amoeba.
Amoeba obtains the food through phagocytosis process.
Since amoeba has no mouth, it takes the food into its body by means of pseudopodia, which completely encloses the particle of food that is enveloped in vacuoles.
The digestion stage, in amoeba, occurs in the presence of several enzymes that break the large molecules of food into smaller and soluble molecules which are absorbed and utilised for cellular functions.
In the egestion stage, the amount of food left in vacuoles is removed by breaking off the cell membrane.
