Question

Question) Under what conditions gases deviate to a large extent from ideal behaviour ? Justify with respect to kinetic molecular theory?

Solution

1. Gases deviate from ideal gas behaviour under low temperature or high pressure.

2. This is because, at low temperature the speed of the molecules decreases significantly and due to this average volume of gas is very much less than that of container. Under high pressure, the velocity of the molecules is very high that make them difficult to compress.

3. Ideal gases are easily compressible and occupy the volume equal to that of container.
