The farmer covered his mouth while spraying the pesticides on the crop plants because the pesticides are the chemicals which are used to kill the pests present on the crop. Pests harm the crops by decreasing the yield of a crop by consuming them. These chemicals can even harm Human beings if contact with them is made in any way. That's is the reason why the farmer was covering his mouth while spraying these chemicals.
This is the only reason why it is advised to always wash vegetables and fruits before consuming them to make sure they are free from any sort of chemicals.
