Question

Read the following passage and answer the given questions.

One of the chief uses of sodium carbonate has been in the conversion of Ca(OH)2(s) to concentrated aqueous solution of NaOH which in turn was used in the manufacture of soap.

Ca(OH)2(s)+2Na+(aq)+CO23(aq)CaCO3(s)+2Na+(aq)+2OH(aq)

In 1775, in order to gain independence from the importation of natural Na2CO3, the French government offered a prize to anyone who could devise a process to prepare Na2CO3 from NaCl.

A more economical process but based on the same principle was given by :

A
Solvay

Solution

The correct option is A Solvay
Leblanc process gradually became obsolete after the development of the Solvay process.

Solvay process results in sodium carbonate (Na2CO3) from brine (as a source of sodium chloride (NaCl)) and from limestone (as a source of calcium carbonate (CaCO3).

The overall process is: 2NaCl+CaCO3Na2CO3+CaCl2
