Plasmodium falciparum is the most dangerous species, common in certain parts of India with an incubation period of about 12 days. It causes malignant (Aestivo-autumnal or Pernicious or Cerebral or Tropical) tertian malaria.
Plasmodium malariae is the species of malarial parasite discovered by Laveran. It is common in tropical Africa, Burma, Sri Lanka and parts of India. Its incubation period is 28 days. Recurrence of fever is after 72 hours (every 4th day). It causes quartan malaria.
In 1897, Sir Ronald Ross, a doctor who was born at Almora in India and was a medical professional in the Indian Army, established that the malarial parasite is transmitted by the bite of a female Anopheles mosquito.
