Insulin is a peptide hormone which is produced by beta cells of islets of Langerhans. These cells are present in the endocrine portion of pancreas. When the sugar level rises in blood, the insulin hormone is secreted by pancreas causing the uptake of glucose into the cells.

Proinsulin is a single polypeptide chain composed of the A and B subunits of insulin joined by the C peptide region. This C peptide is not present in the mature insulin and is removed during the maturation process.
