Solution
The correct option is C Increase pollution by particulate matters Reforestation is the process of restoring a forest that once existed but was removed at some point of time in the past.
Reforestation may occur naturally in a deforested area. However, it can be sped up by planting trees with due consideration to biodiversity that earlier existed in that area.
Reforestation is very important to save the Earth from deterioration, as removal of the forest cover has become common due to various reasons such as forest fires, agricultural needs, human needs, logging, and mining.
Advantages of reforestation are as follows :
It decreases the pollution by particulate matter as it helps in deposition of suspended particulates on the leaves which are subsequently washed down by rain waters. Hence option c is the answer.
Helps in recovering the damaged soil as it prevents soil erosion and adds humus (dark, organic material that forms in soil when plant and animal matter decays) to soil. Thereby, increasing its fertility.
Planting more trees will lead to more transpiration. This water is added to the normal moisture of the air thus making the air saturated faster and brings rain. So the statements in options a and b are correct.
It helps in revival of watersheds (areas of land that drain all the streams and rainfall to a common outlet such as the outflow of a reservoir) that play a vital role in the environmental balance.
Forests can regulate groundwater levels and increase drainage of soils where the water table is close to the surface. Trees with enormous roots can absorb more water and store it in roots that increase the amount of water on the Earth. Hence the statement in option d is correct.
It helps in preserving various species of animals and plants that are affected due to the deforestation process.
