Water pollution is an undesirable change in the physical, chemical or biological characteristics of water brought about by pollutants. These include waste materials generated from homes (organic matter), factories (toxic substances like heavy metals) and other establishments that get into the water bodies and contaminate it.

Globally 80% of wastewater flows back into the ecosystem without being treated or reused.

Around 1.8 billion people use a source of drinking water contaminated with faeces putting them at risk of contracting cholera, dysentery, typhoid and jaundice. It is according to a UN report released in Durban, South Africa, on the occasion of World Water Day in 2017.

Unfortunately, a lot of developing countries cannot afford to treat most of their waste water.
