Charles Darwin proposed his theory of natural selection in 1858. His theory states that organisms undergo competition for food, water, shelter etc. As a result there is a struggle for existence. In this struggle only the ones which are better develeoped will survive (survival of the fittest). He believed that nature selects only those organisms which have favorable variations (natural selection). After careful observations, he finally came to the conclusion that variation is the raw material for evolution and natural selection is the operating force.
