The sporophyte bear sporangia which produce haploid spores by undergoing the process of reduction division or meiosis. Therefore, the event marked 3 in the image is meiosis. The haploid spores upon germination forms a haploid gametophyte which is marked as 2. The gametophyte upon maturation produce haploid gametes by the process of mitosis, marked as 4 in the image . These gametes then fuse to form the diploid zygote.
