The diploid sporophyte is labelled 1 is the given image. It develops from a diploid zygote produced by the fusion of male and female haploid gametes. The sporophyte bear sporangia which produce haploid spores by undergoing the process of reduction division or meiosis. Therefore, the event marked 3 in the image is meiosis. The haploid spores upon germination forms a haploid gametophyte which is marked as 2. The gametophyte upon maturation produce haploid gametes by the process of mitosis, marked as 4 in the image . These gametes then fuse to form the diploid zygote.
