Regarding the assertion and reason, choose the correct option.
Assertion [A]: White blood cells are the soldiers of defence of our body.
Reason [R]: Neutrophil, basophil, eosinophil and monocyte acts as a part of a non-specific defence system.
Both assertion and reason are correct and reason explains the assertion.
WBCs (white blood cells) play a major role in the immunity. They recognise the foreign bodies/pathogens/germs and destroy them. There are five types of WBCs namely, eosinophils, basophils, neutrophils, monocytes and lymphocytes. All of these cells except lymphocytes take part in the nonspecific type of defence mechanism. The non-specific defence mechanism is the mechanism that protects us from all the pathogens and not just from a few specific ones and their toxins, unlike lymphocytes. Lymphocytes are specific to specific pathogens and hence, form part of a specific defence system.
