Regarding the assertion and reason, select the right option.
Assertion (A): In dicots during germination, the hypocotyl breaks the seed coat and moves in an upward direction to form the shoot system.
Reason (R): The radicle in the embryo breaks the seed coat and moves in downward direction to form root system.
Both A and R are true but R does not explain A
During seed germination, the dormant seed imbibes water activating enzymes which leads to the onset of metabolic activity in seed. This will result in the secretion of hormones like auxin and gibberellins majorly. Auxins induce growth of shoot and gibberellins induce growth of root. Apart from this, these hormones are also responsible for plant movements. By the action of gibberellins in epicotyl, the radicle moves in the downward direction to form the root. Similarly, by auxin action in hypocotyl, it elongates towards light and leads to the formation of shoot. In other words, these movements are mutually exclusive and driven by different mechanisms.
