Poriferans are diploblastic and the cells are arranged in two layers. Choanocytes are also called as the collar cells maintain the water current in the sponges. They have a central flagellum with a tuft of microvilli. Sponges feed on minute organisms and small organic particles, which enter the body through water current and are ingested by the choanocytes.
Amoebocytes are amoeba-like cells scattered in the sponges. Amoebocytes are also called as archaeocytes, named for the fact that they move throughout the mesohyl in an amoeba-like fashion. They store, digest and transports food, excrete wastes, secrete skeleton and also may give rise to buds in asexual reproduction.
