Question

Respiration is defined as a biochemical process consisting of oxidation and degradation of food with release of energy.
a) Differentiate between aerobic and anaerobic respiration.
b) C6H12O6yeast−−−zymase
____________ +2CO2+50KJ energy
c) List out the factors affecting respiration.

Solution

a) Aerobic respiration-
  • Breakdown of glucose in presence of oxygen.
  • The complete breakdown of glucose to carbon dioxide and water
  • Release a high amount of energy.
Anaerobic respiration-
  • Takes place in absence of oxygen
  • Partial breakdown of glucose into ethanol or lactic acid depending on the pathway.
  • Releases a lower amount of energy.

zymase
b) C₆H₁₂O₆ --------------------> C₂H₅OH + 2CO₂ + 50KJ energy
yeast

c) Factors affecting respiration in plants-
  • Age- young plants have higher rates of respiration
  • Temp- respiration decreases when the temp is low
  • O₂- lower the amount of O₂, lower the respiration
  • CO₂- higher the CO₂, lower the respiration.
  • Lack of water decreases respiration
  • Damage in plant cell decreases the rate of respiration
