Question

Rewrite the following sentences by using the correct symbol > (greater than) or < (less than) in the blanks given :
(1) The ionization potential of Potassium is ________ that of Sodium.
(2) The electronegativity of Iodine is ________ that of Chlorine.

Open in App
Solution

(1) As we move down the group new shells are added hence the atomic radius increases. The ionization potential decreases down the group as the atomic radii increases. Hence, potassium has less ionization potential than sodium.

(2) As we move down the group new shells are added hence the atomic radius increases. Electronegativity decreases down the group as the atomic radii increases. Hence, iodine is less electronegative than chlorine and fluorine is the most electronegative.
