The process of absorption of water in plants takes place through special structures called as root hairs. These are the extensions of the epidermal cells of the root. They are highly permeable to water and also contain some hydrophilic substances like pectin and cellulose. These root hairs also have lot of fluid filled vacuoles. The old root hairs are periodically replaced by the new ones.
The factors responsible are pressure potential, solute potential, matrix potential, gravity.
