Tip of root is hairless root cap. The meristematic region (zone of active cell division) is present just behind the root cap after quiescent centre. This is followed by zone of cell elongation, which is followed by zone of cell maturation.
Root hairs are unicellular elongation of root epidermis, called as epiblema. The root hairs are present in zone of cell maturation and absorb water from soil. In fact root epiblema cells are elongated as root hair for absorption. The elongation helps in increasing the surface area for absorption.
