During the developmental stages of the ovarian follicles when the primordial follicle gets surrounded by few more layers of granulosa cells it forms the primary follicle. These primary follicles grow in size under the influence of FSH and LH. Spindle shaped cells from the ovarian interstitium accumulate around the granulosa cells to form another layer of cells called the theca. The formation of the secondary follicle is marked by his thecal layer getting differentiated into inner theca interna and outer theca externa. Upon further development cells of theca interna and the granulosa cells secrete estrogen-rich fluid which starts accumulating internal to the theca interna leading to the formation of the antral cavity. The formation of the antral cavity marks the formation of the tertiary follicle.
