Substrate level phosphorylation is the formation of ATP by the conversion of substrates and is oxygen independent.
In oxidative phosphorylation, the oxidation of NADH and FADH2 drives the electron transport chain and the electron is accepted by the oxygen molecule and is reduced. The hydrogen gradient is used to synthesise ATP.
