Show the formation of sodium ion.(atomic number of sodium(Na) is 11)

Open in App
Solution

Definition of valency.

The number of valence electrons lost or gained by an atom in order to attain stability is called valency.

The atomic number of sodium = 11

Electronic configuration = 2,8,1

since sodium has one electron in its outermost shell, it does not have stable electronic configuration.

sodium loses its one electron and achieve the stable configuration as 2,8.

Na-1e-Na+2,8,12,8

A sodium atom(Na) has 11 protons and 11 electrons. On losing one electron, it becomes a sodium ion(Na+).
