Except CCl4, other tetrahalides are easily hydrolysed by water because central atoms in MCl4 has vacant d-orbitals which can accomodate lone pair of electron from oxygen atom of water but carbon does not have vacant d-orbitals to accomodate these lone pairs of electrons.
