Question

Sixty crates, each of which can hold 36 mangoes, are required to pack a certain number of mangoes. How many crates, each of which can hold 48 mangoes, will be required for the same number of mangoes? What kind of proportion is there between the number of crates and the number of mangoes in each crate?

Solution

Total number of crates = 60
Total number of mangoes in each crate = 36
Total number of mangoes in 60 crates = 36 × 60 = 2160
Number of crates required to keep mangoes (each of which will have 48 mangoes)=216048
Thus, the total number of crates required to keep mangoes (each of which will have 48 mangoes) is 45.
Number of crates and the number of mangoes in each crate are in inverse proportion because when the number of mangoes decreases, the number of crates increases.
